JUST IN TIME. . . . . .
Our show was held just in time before DFRA imposed its restriction on all bird shows. Seven days earlier and we would have been counting the cost of a large financial loss, like other unlucky cage bird societies. This year the club had several gains in enteries through large patronages granted by specialist societies one was Gloster canaries for which the I.G.B.A. had granted full patronage. It was from this section, after careful deliberation by the six show judges that one of D & R Warr's enteries, a flighted dark crest buff corona cock, took the best in show award.Their were 55 Glosters entered, and judge Ron Richmond stated how pleased he was to see so many benched. So successful were D & R Warr stud that they won best Gloster, best Champion Corona and best Consort. Father & son proudley collected both the Parker Knowll Shied (Best Bird in Show) and the High Wycombe CBS shield (Best Canary in Show). Novice Gloster wins were best corona and best consort Mr Ron Chamberlin.
The Fife section was judged by the popular Mr Chris Smith who awarded best champion exhibitor Pete Westbrook for an unflighted clear yellow cock. Surprisingly all the fifes benched were in the champion classes only. Jim Scott did his usal best by winning the Border section with an unflighted three-parts-dark hen. The norwich entry of an unflighted yellow hen belonging to S. Camillieri came first in this section. the Old Varieties was won by Club Chairman Brian Hogg with a flighted North Dutch Frill hen, he also benched Best Lancashire. Any Other Variety Canary went to Oxford's Dave Allen for one of his Lizards. Robin Hurworth achieved best coloured canary. Both Ron Richmond & Chris Smith judged the remaining canary sections between them.
A strong Budgerigar section was judged by Mr Malcom Freemantle who awarded best budgerigar to an adult grey green cock owned by Alan Joyce. Alan also benched the best young bird, thus receiving both The High Wycombe & District Show Association shield (Best Budgerigar) and The High Wycombe CBS Plate (Best Budgerigar Young Bird). Lillian Ferris was the intermediate winner with an adult any other colour hen, and clib Treasurer Joe Edwards won the beginner section with a young pied cock.
Foreign bird enteries were surprisingly down, compared with previous years, even after the Foreign Bird Association had granted us with the South Midland Area Show. Neverthless, the quality of the enteries was extremley high and Mr Keith Garrett who made a welcome return from a serious illness, came and judged. A sunbird belonging to Robin Hurworth triumphed to take best foreign bird and The B.A.Hogg Trophy (Best Foreign Bird). He also claimed the award for best foreign softbill and best nector feeder with a bay-headed tanager. Best lovebird (Peach-faced) was benched by Mrs Mary Alderidge, she also benched the best CYOB lovebird, Best rare seedeater went to George Taylor's pied red-faced pytilla while Dave Brown's long tailed grassfinch was awarded best Australian finch.
British birds were again plentiful and an adult lesser redpoll cock owned by Ian Fletcher came out on top for which he received The High Wycombe CBS Cup (Best British Bird). The best CYB British bird was that of S. Horwodd. The section was judged by Mr Clive Hill.
We were this year awarded Gold Patronage by the Zebra Finch society. The club's patronage secretary Mick Stone was the outright winner of best zebra finches, with a pair of well-presented 2007 owner-bred chestnut-flanked whites. Mick also won best champion adults with a pair of normals. The novice prize went to Brown & Reyner for a pair of CYB normals and they also claimed best novice adults with another pair of normals. Dennis Webster chairman of the Zebra Finch society, judge both zebra finches and bengalese and he gave Mick Stone another award this time for best bengalese for a pair of self chocolates. Best novice bengalese was a pair of fawn and whites benched by Dave Brown.
The clubs trophy for best ladies exhibit (The Martin Cup) was again won by Mrs Mary Aldridge. Rosettes were exchanged with the North Surrey Alliance of Bird Clubs, which were awarded to best in main sections.
High Wycombe presented laminated certificates for Best Canary, Budgerigar, British Bird, Foreign Bird, Zebrafinch, Bengalese Finch, Ladies & Junior Exhibits.
Perpetual Trophies presented at the show were:
The Parker Knoll Trophy (Best Bird in Show). The High Wycombe CBS Shield (Best Canary). The B.A. Hogg Trophy (Best Foreign Bird). The High Wycombe Cup (Best British Bird). The High Wycombe District Show Association Shield (Best Budgerigar). The High Wycombe CBS Plate (Best Budgerigar Young Bird). The Martin Cup (Best Ladies Exhibit). The High Wycombe Junior Trophy (Best Junior Exhibit).
